COMP SCI 1013 - Introduction to Computer Systems, Networks and Security

Report 2 - Understanding and Evaluating Your Home Network Setup

In this assignment, you will delve into the practical application of the knowledge gained from our lectures to achieve a deeper understanding of your home network environment. You should not only investigate and analyse your home network but also determine the rationale behind the choices. The essay has three sections:

Section 1: Internet Service Analysis

Begin by investigating the internet service that your household is currently subscribed to. In this section, you should:

Identify the specific plan and package you have chosen.

Specify the allocated bandwidth, both download and upload speeds.

Provide a detailed explanation of why you opted for this particular plan. Discuss any factors that influenced your decision, such as speed requirements, budget considerations, or specific features that align with your needs.

Section 2: Home Network Device Evaluation

Next, investigating the devices responsible for managing your home network. This could include a router, NBN modem, wireless access points (APs), or a combination of different network devices. In this section, you should:

Report the technical specifications of each device, including make and model. (Figures are optional but welcome. You do not need to report detailed spec, just the relevant ones to the following points)

Describe the primary purposes of these devices within your network setup.

Explain why you chose or continue to use these devices, particularly in relation to your internet service plan. Consider factors like compatibility, performance, and any special features that enhance your network's functionality.

Section 3: Home Network Description

Conclude your essay by providing a comprehensive overview of your home network itself. In this section, you should:

Describe the typical number of devices that are simultaneously connected to your network.

Document the range of IP addresses assigned to these devices and the protocol used (DHCP, static IP etc)

Reflect on how your home network accommodates the various devices and activities within your household, considering the information from Sections 1 and 2.

Note

If You Only Use Mobile Network

In Section 1, retain the discussion of the mobile network plan you've chosen and provide reasons for your choice.

In Section 2, focus on explaining how your other devices are connected to the internet via your mobile phone. Discuss the technical aspects and any challenges or advantages of this setup.

In Section 3, analyse the IP addresses and network configurations for the devices connected through your mobile phone's hotspot. Consider factors like IP assignment and network performance in this context.

If You Live in a Dormitory with a Public Network**:

Begin by consulting your strata or dormitory managers about the network setup, as mentioned. Try to connect multiple devices to the public network and investigate its configurations.

We acknowledge that you may not be able to access all information. But please describe the investigative process you undertook, including any findings and limitations. Your assignment will be evaluated based on the effort and methodology you apply during your investigation.

Submission

A written essay with 1500 ~ 2000 words + figures (optional)

Background Story

You are programming a robot that helps hospital staff in carrying out some oftheir duties. The robot is required to visit the patient rooms and check whetherthe patient is present. If that is the case, the robot must ask the patient if theyhave taken their assigned medication. At the end of the visits, the robot reportsto the doctor which patients were not in the room, and which did not take theirmedication.Important NoteEvery implementation point described below is associated a number of marks. Inprevious years, we noticed that students frequently try to farm partial marks by writingsome amount of code for every section, even though none of it can even be executed. This is not the way to develop any complex system, and we intend to disincentivise it.For the reason described above, if a node implementing a piece of functionality doesnot execute, at most half the marks for that ROS node can be awarded. Marks arerounded up. Therefore, if an item is worth 5 marks, the most that a non-executablecode can get is 3.By non-executable, we mean that the code immediately terminates with an error dueto syntactic issues in the file, or wrong import statements. Runtime exceptions or bugsthat do not happen in the early stages of the execution will not be considered as non-executable, and therefore will not incur the penalty.Initialization• Create a package called "resit_coursework". Remember to maintain thecorrect dependencies in package.xml and CMakeLists.txt during development
